in answer to your question of why do we need one, I know that the UofU gets a lot of notoriety because of its medical school and as George Bailey said in It's a Wonderful Life, to paraphrase, "this town (Provo/BYU) needs a medical school if only to keep them from crawling on their knees to Potter (SLC/UofU)."

It just seems odd that a school whose motto is the glory of God is intelligence does not have a medical school, since so much knowledge about life and man's mortality comes from that field of study.
