High scores on the hyperbole and stereotype scales
IMO, you have gone quite a ways overboard here.

Nobody runs several hours a day (excepting professional or elite athletes), the body just can't take it. I know several who run 4-6 days a week for maybe 30-45 minutes though, which is also just about what is recommended by many physicians with respect to regular exercise. Granted the intensity for running is a bit higher perhaps, but in terms of time it is definitely not excessive. I don't think spending 3-5 hours in the morning per week is excessive. As a cyclist my training is usually very similar, averaging about 4-6 hours per week.

Secondly, I can speak from personal experience that it takes a lot of training to do a longer event in cycling or running, and there is a great deal of pride and satisfaction in preparing, training and completing such an event. People are proud of themselves for being dedicated enough to work consistently towards and complete a physical challenge that they would not have been able to do previously. It is very rewarding and fulfilling and I see no reason why people can't celebrate that a little. IMO it isn't about ego, for most it is about accomplishment.

Finally, stop lauding working 10-12 hour days as a virtue. For many, this is simply a justification for workaholism, which somehow doesn't seem to be mentioned near enough. The rest of us who are able to be successful and get our work done in less time have no less work ethic and as a reformed workaholic myself understand that a balanced life is much better than a 12 hour workday unbalanced one.
