I fell in love with BYU Football in the mid to late 70's. It was this crazy passing attack that was unlike anything else in college football.
I was raised in the time of the wishbone and the dominance of teams like the Nittany Lions, Tom Osborn and Nebraska, Barry Switzer and Oklahoma. Woody Hayes' Buckeyes, Bo Schembechler's Wolverines and Bear Bryant and the Crimson Tide. And of course the legendary Irish and USC, and Texas was always good. Three yards and a cloud of dust, Tailback U etc.
And here is BYU, this upstart, using this crazy pass happy offense, with complex routs, finesse, and very good QB's. I was hooked and still am to this day.
I found which bars I could sneak into under age, have some suds and watch BYU. Everyone would be cheering for ASU, or Arizona in the old WAC, and I'd pretty much be the lone voice yelling for BYU. It was all good, and wouldn't you know, along came recognition across the country, and then a National Title. I really can't ever see me NOT having BYU as MY TEAM...
