3 three and outs out of those 10. So basically 1.25 punts per half of football, less than 1 three and out per game. That is a glaringly bad stat and a huge indictment of the defense.
BYU has not won the time of possession in any of the first 4 games. Every opposing offense has had at least 170 rushing yards. It is really hard to win football games if you can’t stop the run. Want the offense to perform better? Give them better field position without relying solely on turnovers. There is a strong correlation between field position and points scored. Give opposing defenses less time to rest by getting the ball back to BYU’s offense faster. BYU’s offense is never going against a tired defense.
To be fair, BYU’s defense has stepped up somewhat. They’ve forced 4 turnover on downs and 6 takeaways. Takeaways may have changed the Utah game. It didn’t against Washington. But you can’t depend on those as a defense. Tuiaki’s scheme is death by a 1000 cuts, hoping the other team makes bad decisions.
