Yes but your myth buster is not really a myth
If you slow your metabolism down then what you were eating before to lose weight will no longer work to lose weight. You will now have to eat even less which in all likelihood will cause you to gain back any losses you had plus extra. Starving yourself is not an effective way to lose weight.
