I was doing:
Basically, you have to spot, range, dope, and then take 3 shoots on target, with each subsequent shot giving fewer points for an impact. I can guarantee you that nobody in that competition is shooting a 30-06. Very few are shooting 30 cal or larger, and if they are shooting 30 cal, it's almost guaranteed to be a .308. It is critical to watch your impact through a scope and make a dope correction if you miss. The top half of the competition was all shooting 6 and 6.5 mm cartridges. The only thing separating the top 10 was the ability to read the wind and make accurate dope adjustments to compensate for the wind.
If it is truly a target gun, you will have so much more fun with minimal recoil while maintaining a stable trajectory out to 1200 yards.
IMO, the problem with the 30-06 is that, for target shooting, it is inferior to the smaller calibers, and for hunting, it is inferior to the 30 cal magnums like the 30 win mag. For 30 cal, I shoot a .30 Nosler. Just my 2 cents.
