A BIL, 3 cousins, and many friends went to Utah and still die hard BYU fans

I don’t know why your friends thought it was a necessity to be a Utah fan because their child is attending there.
I also have a few friends who went to BYU but their parents are Utah alums. The parents never switched fandoms.
Personally if my kids had a choice between Utah and BYU-I or BYUH I would choose a BYU school.
