Was to add additional pressure to cycle the bolt due to lessened gas return from a lower amount of gunpowder in the casing. If you didn’t have a good adapter on, or it wasn’t on tight enough, it seemed you got more misfeeds and jams because they didn’t eject like a live round.

There’s usually not a projectile with blanks. Just the gunpowder in the shell. Hence why they’re blanks.
