The bishop involved there was Dr. Kearl from the Economics Department

who has long maintained a particular grudge towards athletes. The student as I recall had been attending semi-regularly, but had also been going to his girlfriend's ward and his home ward. The athletic department basically told all athletes to move out of Dr. Kearl's ward.
