It has a focal length of 10mm-22mm. Allows you to capture a much wider picture
than you would with say a 35mm lens. As dsp81 said, prime lenses are often the way to go but they come with a price tag. For the money the Sigma 10mm-20mm lens has been great.

Here is a picture I took at St Peters Basilica a few months ago. I wish I had taken another with a 35mm lens so you could see the difference. I was standing as close to the pillar as possible. At 10mm you can see that the picture is so wide it becomes distorted.
