In a strict financial sense you're probably right.
However!
Being able to disconnect yourself and your family, bond with them, even just for a few hours every other Saturday, goes a long way to increase your ability to weather life's storms. If buying football tickets helps this family 1) deal with/cope/withstand/etc the barrage of life's difficulties and 2) bond and create long lasting family memories then that just might be the best use of the money.
