seem to be those that think the season is over with a single loss. That's a mentality that I just don't understand. Even back when we were in the WAC and then the MWC, it was always about national recognition in the way of rankings that I paid attention to. Didn't bother me a bit if we shared a championship if we were ranked. If we won a championship without being ranked nationally, that's a disappointing season in my book.
So, there are different outlooks on this subject. Making some sort of economic argument in favor of returning to a G5 conference just makes no sense at all. I do understand that some would prefer to compete for conference championships. Personally, I think the cost is way too high for the privilege of competing for the MWC championship. That championship, which nobody nationally even begins to care about, is not worth giving up a chance to stick with the big boys of college football during this time of division between the "have's" and the "have not's." To me, it's crucial that we end up on the side of the "have's," and we can do that (or at least have a chance to do that) through independence. If we crash and burn in independence, so be it. At that point, we can go back to a G5 conference and compete there. I just don't want to volunteer for that spot near the bottom of the college football pecking order.
