When I was in Sao Paulo, there was an American dentist that the missionaries
that needed work went to. I would have him check with the office. In one of my areas, we would pass by a little dentist office every day. I decided to make an appointment for a cleaning just because I had been down there for about a year. The dentist asked me which tooth hurt and when I tried to tell him that I didn't have any specific problem and just wanted my teeth checked, he took out a little hammer and proceeded to tap on each tooth asking if it hurt. After he had tapped each one, he said I was good. He didn't even charge me anything. I then realized why the office said only to go to the one approved dentist.
