BYU students are, of a necessity, more well-rounded today. Sure, some get

in on just grades alone, but most students were also active in sports and other extra-curriculars to boost their application. Plus, BYU students typically pick BYU over other schools BECAUSE of sports and social life. The super nerdy Mormons go to MIT and Harvard and such.
