MASSIVE EDIT: I change the methodology to round to the nearest whole number instead of rounding down. I also broke out each timeframe separately.
Here is a breakdown of wins per season, adjusted to a 13 win season. To do this, I simply took the win percentage (wins/(total games)) and multiplied by 13, then rounded to the nearest whole number. For example, 1984 would appear as a 13 win season on this chart, while 1996 would appear as a 12 win season. There are 4 sets of bars on the chart. The blue bars show the number of seasons at each win total as a percentage of all BYU football seasons before Edwards. The red bars show Lavell's years. The purple bars show Crowton's years. The green bars show Bronco's years.
Main takeaways:
1. BYU football before Lavell tended toward "4" win seasons. Once Lavell took over, that shifted toward "8" win seasons. Bronco's tenure has been bi-modal between "11" and "8" win seasons.
2. This means that BYU football has been steadily improving since its humble beginnings before Lavell. Lavell had 5 phenomenal seasons (1979, 1980, 1983, 1984, 1996). Otherwise, BYU football since Lavell took over has tended toward 8-10 win seasons.
3. Bronco has, far and away, more often had 11 win seasons than any other coach. He has also seen many 8 win seasons, just as is to be expected when looking at the past 40 years of BYU football. Notably absent are any "6" win and below seasons, which were common before Lavell and happened under Crowton as well.
4. BYU football has progressed since 1922 significantly. After a short dip during the early 2000s under Crowton, Bronco has brought the program back to its norms under Lavell. While he has not had a 1984- or 1996- or even 1980-caliber season, he has come close on 3 occasions. All within the span of 10 years, not 30+. I expect that in the next few years (possibly even this year...however unlikely), we shall see another 12 or 13 win season.
For those that are interested, here is the same chart with the y-axis being the number of seasons, instead of percentage of seasons.
