I should say, rather, that I mostly agree with your overall point.
I think a large element of it is also to show that they *tried* to protect the trademark from becoming generic.
They may not actually care that anything happens from the letter, other than they can later point to it as an example of where they attempted to protect it when a more serious infraction happens down the road.
