He never said fans... He was talking about the national media and analysts. He we simply saying that they'll no longer have the attention they had before.

Leave it to a fickle, hyper critical fan base to automatically assume he's talking about you. I'm a die hard BYU fan, but I swear a lot of you are the jealous girlfriend equivalent of a college football fambase.
