As a religious institution, one of BYU's primary missions is to foster faith in the restored gospel of the Lord, Jesus Christ. With this in mind, the university appreciates that certain students may for various reasons lose or surrender their membership in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints ("Church"). For those students who are affiliated with the Church while at BYU and later become disaffiliated with the Church while still a student at BYU, the process for continuing as a student is set forth as follows:
Students (LDS or not) who would ordinarily be expelled from the university for violation of various conduct provisions of the Honor Code will continue to be expelled for such actions.
Students who maintain compliance with the Honor Code except as to maintaining their affiliation with the Church will be offered the following options:
1. Assistance in transfer to alternative institutions and good-faith efforts of the university to assist in such transfer decisions.
2. An opportunity to remain at BYU, paying non-member tuition, with additional restrictions on viewpoint expression during their time as a BYU student. While the University appreciates that such restrictions may be unappealing, in order to strike a balance between accommodating students who have disaffiliated from the Church but wish to continue their education at BYU and maintaining the sort of environment conducive to fostering faith in the restored gospel of Jesus Christ, such restrictions are a necessary compromise.
