We were about 25 minutes south of Playa del Carmen, and the company brought the car to us and picked it up when we were done. We drove it to Tulum, Chichen Itza and Ek Balam. The great part about having the car is the ability to stop at other sites along the way. There are a ton of cenotes. Some of the tour buses will plan in a stop at one of the more popular ones, but you are stuck with a ton of tourists. With the car, you can get to Chichen right when it opens and almost be done before the hoards of buses start pulling.
