You can try asking the contractors that come out to give an estimate.
You could ask if they know anyone who does this type of work on the side in their spare time for cash. Most will probably say they aren't allowed to or they don't know of someone. But you might get lucky.

If you paid these guys $40 an hour to replace your compressor that would be over double what they make at work and your total bill for labor would be about $160 instead of almost $500.
