Purists say that without the rule defenses would have to be more conservative
Meaning that defenders would have to stay closer to their goal. However, if defenders stayed closer to their goal this would open more space on the field for the offense to work. Consider that in the NFL a safety has to consider this tradeoff of strategy. If the safety plays deep then that opens more space underneath. If the safety plays close to the line that creates a greater threat deep. The offsides rule in soccer greatly diminishes the risk tradeoff for the defense, as it allows the defense to use the offsides rule to minimize what the offense can do. This puts the offense at a great disadvantage leading many teams to implement the "hope & pray" strategy of scoring goals.
