I think that refs do being overly cautious in calling it.
I think the rule should be interpreted as "clearly offside" rather than "maybe offside", "an inch offside", etc.
I have seen so many potential goals and breakaways thwarted by a flag when replay shows the players were even.
Soccer purists: would a rule requiring that the entire body be beyond the last defender to get the call ruin the game?
