Unfortunately I can't say where to stay on the west side...we went in April and spent every night a few miles south of Dublin. It was great, but it made trips to the ring of Kerry and cliffs of Moher really difficult.

I think Limerick or Killarney would be great to stay in for a day or two as a base. Could see everything on the west without as much driving as we did.
