I posted on this a few months ago, but I have been watching a documentary on the Expos and what the loss of a MLB team meant to Montreal. I did some digging on Montreal, and was surprised to see the population/economic strength of that region. And I knew, but did not fully appreciate, the strength of fan support in Montreal. So if I were the MLB Czar, here's what I would do:
- Move the Rays to Montreal
- Allow the A's to move to Las Vegas
- Expand two franchises to Mexico City and Monterrey, Mexico
- regular season is 154 games
- change the playoffs to allow 8 teams
- first round is a 1 game playoff between division winners, hosted by division winner
- second round is 5 game divisional playoff
- 3rd round is 7 game league championship series
- MLB will pay franchises and players for shorter games/shorter at bats/shorter time per pitches thrown
- MLB will allow for unique sponsorship/advertising to keep TV commercial breaks shorter
- both leagues can DH
- create AAA additions: Havana, Puerto Rico, Santo Domingo DR, Costa Rica, Bogota and Caracas. 3 each to Pacific and International leagues. The whole goal is to make baseball the North American sport.
Leagues would be arranged like this:
AL East: Baltimore, NY Yankees, Boston, Montreal
AL North: Toronto, Detroit, Cleveland, Chicago White Sox
AL South: Minnesota, Kansas City, Texas, Houston
AL West: Seattle, LA Angels, Las Vegas A's, Colorado
NL East: NY Mets, Philadelphia, Nats, Pittsburgh
NL North: Chicago Cubs, Milwaukee, St. Louis, Reds
NL South: Atlanta, Miami, Monterrey, Mexico City
NL West: LA Dodgers, Giants, Padres, Diamondbacks
The whole goal of these divisions is to promote regional rivalries and enhance the playoffs. The playoffs is when casual fans really start to pay attention, so make more divisional wild card games.
