It was much more common for this to happen in the late 90's, early 2000's, today
... it doesn't happen as often as BYU-Idaho has become a much more viable option.
But yes, it still happens today however the student needs to be somewhat close academically. And yes, still today the more money you've donated, the greater the chances increase.
