I loved playing (not college, of course), and I love watching. I think there is a lot to be learned from the experience of competing, training, being part of a team, etc.

But I completely understand when a player looks around and thinks, "This never leads to a paycheck, and consumes almost every aspect of my life. Why do I keep doing this?"
