I supported Mendenhall. I think he was a good coach who was good with Xs and Os. I didn't think he was a great recruiter and I had concerns about his ability to develop talent. In the end, I think (hope) BYU football is better off now than before because recruiting and player development is the lifeblood of college sports. I think those positions are defendable but I had no trouble with folks that disagreed with me on a rational basis on those issues.
The fans I had trouble with were the ones that (IMO) got hysterical over things like getting their feelings hurt because he praised an away crowd or read way too much into saying football wasn't the highest priority or that the coaches should have a life off the field. Those criticisms were just plain whiney IMO and, while I don't go out of my way to bring up old arguments, I can understand why someone like me would want to point out that the very, very popular Coach Sitake says pretty much the same kind of thing.
