The numbers aren't so lopsided that it's super clear that bear spray is better
every situation is unique.
That said, there are other dangers besides bears that may be worth considering as well.
It's also important to recognize that the bears on the Appalachian trail are going to be black bears, which are smaller and less aggressive than brown bears. Also easier to kill with a firearm.
