Talent level in the NBA is pretty incredible right now. It's a little unfortunate that some imbalance has resulted, but popularity is up because people like to see stars play and there are a lot of stars right now. In recent times, the league was probably least popular in the late 90s to mid 2000s when there was a bit of a talent dearth outside of the Lakers.
