In reading the related thread, there were enough posts to indicate that some of the BYU camps are being run simply by students and that the coaches and players are simply making limited appearances. Very disappointing. I don't have a lot of experience with basketball camps, but I do have experience with football and baseball camps and, by and large, the football and baseball camps my sons have attended have been run almost exclusively by the coaches and players in the program and they have generally been excellent. None of my sons have ever been to a BYU camp.
If it is a camp geared toward kids 14 and younger, the camp should be almost exclusively instruction-based and drill-based, with limited scrimmages. Instruction-based camps take a lot of work and effort by coaches and players. If it is a high school camp, I still think it should be run exclusively by the coaches and players, but it will generally be set up for the coaches to see prospects in live situations, which is fine. Camps that include mostly scrimmages are being run by lazy coaches, in my opinion. Scrimmages don't take much work or effort. When I send my kids to camp, I want them to learn something and I want the coaches and players to share their knowledge and experience with my boys. Even if a camp is advertised as a high school prospect camp and there will be lots of live play, there should still be some drills and instruction built in by the coaches.
