My FIL was the same grumpy type - but a golfer.
I made sure that he never beat me golfing, and we got pretty competitive. One day he called up and asked if I'd be his partner at an event at McCall. From then on we were on the same team on just about everything. The icing was when he showed up with a set of clubs that I already had.
