Student Loans are a known financial issue regardless of the job market.
There is no guarantee, so if you are going to play with fire (in the form of a student loan) then you have to expect the possibility of getting burned.
If you don't (as it sounds like your friends didn't) that is poor planning. Not an unexpected financial set back.
