I guess off season wouldn't be so bad since it wouldn't be nearly so packed.

I recommend Vienna since it isn't too far from Rome. and you would be able to see the Italian and Austria alps on the way there. I haven't traveled that much in Italy.

Then Vienna is close to Salzburg and also Bratislava, Slovakia as well as others.
