I'm pretty sure the coaches at the time denied doing that, but it was a rather strange coincidence that he kept getting replaced in blowouts right after completing the pass that gave him 300 yards.
Also, until Jamal Willis showed up, Detmer played in the era when we really didn't have much of a running game, which also contributed a lot to his passing numbers.
All of those are reasons why he was unique like you say. In the end I don't really care--it was lots of fun watching him play.
