Well, several comments about that comparison.
There's nothing wrong with going to a cabin if you prefer that. By all means, do it. I love taking my family to a cabin for a few days.

If you don't like camping, certainly this post is not for you. But the "LOL" mocking comparison is just downright silly. No, it's really not cheaper, unless you're talking only a few nights in a cabin one time vs. just planning to throw away all the camping equipment I mentioned after a single use. It really doesn't work that way.

If I stayed in a typical cabin in Utah for 5 nights, that's probably going to run me around $200 to $250 per night, for a pretty inexpensive cabin. 5 nights, one time, I spent $1000 to $1250. If I wanted to buy EVERYTHING at once that I mentioned for a camping trip, depending upon the cost of the trailer, yeah I could probably spend around $2000+. But everything on that list is reusable, and most of it not just for camping. Just this year, I've been camping either with my wife or my family 4 times (3 nights in Zion with family, 2 nights in Goblin Valley with wife, 2 nights backpacking with wife, 5 nights in Banff with family). How much do you think I would have spent for cabins or other lodging in those areas for those same nights? That's just one spring and summer for my family, and we still have a trip planned to Great Basin.

But, my utility trailer, my camp stove, my tent, my sleeping bags, the air mattresses, etc. don't just last one trip or even one season. The air mattresses wear out, but my double-high I've had for about 4 years now. My camp stove is about 10 years. The trailer, almost 20. Do you still think that's a fair comparison you made to that one week in the cabin?

This is a big investment, I get that. But you also don't buy everything at once. You buy a few things over time, gradually improving what you have, as you can afford it. I've been married over 22 years, so we've had some time to accumulate a lot of nice stuff. And we use it.

Things like our camp stove aren't just single purpose. 2 weeks ago I got a text at 7:00 am on a Saturday that the high priests were in a bind: they were supposed to be cooking for a ward breakfast, and not everybody came though, or planning had been inadequate. They only had one griddle, and just a few guys scheduled to help cook. I pulled out my camp stove and griddle, I was at the park by 8:30, and it's not inaccurate to say that I helped save that ward breakfast. Some people think that's a drawback, but I enjoy helping out and I enjoy cooking. That same camp stove will be in use Saturday night at the homecoming open house for my recently returned missionary son.

So, yeah, you can go to a cabin for a few nights, and it might be cheaper than purchasing all that equipment at once. But let's not mock with a completely silly comparison. I get an awful lot of utility out of my investment.
