You're right it has to start with the youth playing on their own in the streets.
That is what I tell my boys. You want to be the best get out in the steeet and play. Their team practice isnt enough and never will be unless they are so passionate about it they spend hours on their own developing their skills.

Even so that will only take them so far. To reach the next level of elite players you need the academies. No way around it and their arent enough of them. RSL academy has how many utah kids in it? There are hundreds of kids in Utah alone that could easily be plugged in to an academy with drastic improvement in their game. Its about opportunities.

I have played with and against lots of kids who streetball, fancy footwork, nutmegs and flair. Then in game situations they are clueless, poor position, no tactics, even lazy, easily pushed off the ball. Works on the playground and indoor but ultimately doesnt translate to better players. They need structure and opportunities that will never occur at club or high school level.
