I assume this has been done many times and have seen lots of high level articles on it. But to understand why healthcare is so expensive I think we first need to understand where all the money is going on a very detailed level.
The insurance companies are the gateway to healthcare and I'm positive they know exactly where the costs are and who are incurring those costs. In reality, we need the insurance companies to give us a unbiased look at where the money is being spent and how. Further, with a lot of that money going to hospitals and drug companies, we'd need some transparency on their costs as well. Good luck with that.
Is anybody aware of reports that give the necessary kind of detail to truly pinpoint where the money is being spent? I think if made available we'd quickly see that a good chunk of insurance money does to drugs and end of life care. End of life care has potential solutions (maybe not favorable though) but I don't know what to do about drug costs.
