I feel like I have seen the full gamut of seminary experiences. As a student, I was in a class where the kids were swearing at the teacher and telling her she was an idiot. Some of those kids eventually had to be suspended because they were so disruptive. As a teacher, my first class had a bunch of jokers who made wisecracks and pulled stunts all the time. This year, my class is a bunch of angels, who read ahead and are eager to participate and probably know the scriptures better than I do (based on their thoughtful comments in class). Altogether, this pool probably includes about 30 students. Keep in mind, these students are seniors by the time they get their endorsement. They should know what's up by the time they are 17-18 years old.
In general, I think it comes down to these factors:
- Good attendance
- Does the reading
- Passes the tests
- Cooperative in class
- Behavior is not necessarily perfect, but is reasonable for a teenager
Examples of actual situations that have raised red flags for me:
- Swearing at the teacher
- Telling the teacher they are an idiot
- Having attendance below 60% but expecting to be endorsed like the kids who are in the 90s
- Stealing or defacing the teacher's supplies on multiple occasions
- Cheating on makeup work
- Discussing sexual positions during class, within earshot of everyone there
- Blatantly racist comments or actions, without remorse
- Flagrant disruption of other students that happens repeatedly
Any of the items on the bottom list would make me think twice about a full recommendation. Depending on the frequency and severity, that could extend to a caveat or non-recommendation.
