I was on the sideline for BYU @ ECU last year
For the first time in my life I was able to watch a BYU game from the sideline last year when they came here to ECU.

This is something I had looked forward to doing my entire life. How cool to be able to stand beside the players and coaches I had grown up watching. I even got to watch with a former BYU lineman who played with Max Hall and hear his takes on the game.

The experience was simply awful. FROM THE BEGINNING of the game there was no energy, no life, nothing. It was honestly like no one cared - players, coaches, trainers, staff - nobody seemed remotely interested in winning the game. I was absolutely dumbfounded, as were those around me who had sideline passes. This quiet, reserved, uninterested atmosphere is what it was like to be on the sideline during a college football game????

There was ONE PERSON, only one, who showed any emotion, any passion, anything on the sideline that day. Tom Holmoe. Holmoe was running around, barking at guys, giving pep talks, slapping guys on the back, getting in other guys' faces. All the while, the coaches just stood around and mumbled to each other. I saw no attempt to "fire up the troops". None.

I really appreciated what I saw from Holmoe in what appeared to be a completely apathetic environment. Everything else continues to baffle me to this day.

I work at ECU and let me remind you all of just how terrible East Carolina Football was last year - they were giving up over 40 points a game coming into the BYU game! The fact that we lost to ECU last year BY 16 POINTS and only put up 17 on that Swiss cheese defense is almost incomprehensible.

I still just have no explanation for anything I experienced during that game. Of course I know the coaches were trying to win and I'm sure I missed a pep talk or someone trying to get someone else pumped but man, what I did see was just plain apathy.

I hope Sitake's personality from the Utah game in 2016 shows up again this season. What happened to that guy's competitive fire??? The team follows his lead.

I was at the Ecu game also. The game was boring for the most part. But there was some great stuff there too. (FightingCoug12, Mar 22, 2018 at 8:27am)
