The football team went from 2016 where they were eight points from possibly a very special season to 2017, 4 - 9, and the end is nigh.
While I was one who is sounding the alarms about BYU football at the end of the season, it is not clear whether last year was the beginning of a very bad trend or an anomaly.
And well both football and basketball I've seen a bit of a lull, many of BYU's Olympic sports have seen success that they have rarely seen before, or the continuation of program success. Women's volleyball has been consistently good for the past several years with many sweet 16 appearances and if finals appearance against Penn State. Men's cross-country finished third in the nation this past year. Women's soccer was rebuilding this past year, but the several years before this past year they had some of their most successful seasons in their history. BYU baseball is seeing a Resurgence right now.
The fact of the matter is, the college football landscape has changed dramatically since 2011 and the disparity is widening between the G5 teams in the P5 teams in terms of money, exposure and it is led to a greater disparity in recruiting. With BYU football as an independent they are getting greater exposure, more money, and a greater opportunity to shine. Hopefully, Kalani and his revamped coaching staff can get this ship straightened out and BYU can get back to at least winning eight or nine games a season. If they do this I do believe that recruiting will improve.
