Perhaps he felt the snowball that was left at the negotiation table had a better chance of hangin in there if the conversation became a public debate. Zag admins, after all, aren't the only ones fed up w/ the WCC deal. Course, in privacy, the deal's gonna be more about money & exposure strictly (which we all know the MWC isn't gonna offer the Zags better than they already got). In a public forum, however, it's gonna be more about the quality of the matchups & the size of the fanbases. Hair very well may even have had the opinions of BYU fans in mind when he aired the dirty laundry (for all his antics, Hair is a pretty smart & cutthroat boy; he's always struck me as very informed.).
My hunch (& believe me — it tees me off as much as it does you) is that BYU has been working rigorously to steer the Zags back to the WCC rather than follow them "back" to the MWC.
Fans are hardly the only ones who hate the Hair. I think Tom very well may be his biggest non-fan out there; there's very bad blood between those two, I sense. Yet if more of us knew the full story of these negotiations I think you (& perhaps...gulp...I) might even side w/ Hair over Tom on this one. IMO, BYU is a little too overly in-love with the WCC. It is, after all, a very good fit on so many levels (& I fully concur that it is a great fit). Just NOT for men's basketball. Which, imo--should amount to a deal-breaker.
My hunch is the WCC's gonna bend & offer the Zags the money they deserve. The MWC of course wouldn't have anything to counter if it came to that.
