Byu vanilla defense
Successful coaches defeat opponents by1) playing better (execution and intensity) or 2) playing different (diverse schemes)

I have been pleased with Grimes better and different philosophies this spring. I worry about the defense.

It appears the long term defensive goal is to copy Utah by getting pressure rushing four down linemen with press coverage by corners and roaming safeties. Unfortunately we have not had good enough athletes to make this work so we have resorted to a vanilla 4-3 with a lot of zone. I keep hearing coaching comments that we simplify so the players don’t have to think about to many things. This allows them to fly around.

I don’t believe we will ever recruit players skilled enough to out execute the top half of our schedule. In order to be successful we must use diverse schemes to confuse more talented opponents. This was Broncos speciality. I haven’t seen it yet with this coaching staff. Hopefully they will learn.
