I’m not a Utah native; I lived there only long enough to graduate from the MTC and BYU. Oh, and I got married there once, too.
I generally like the state and its residents, but i’m routinely amused and occasionally befuddled by the habits and actions ascribed to Utahns. And I’m surprised to catch myself doing it, too.
If I see someone in Colorado doing something weird, funny or dangerous in traffic, I think, “That guy’s weird, funny or dangerous!” If I see the same stunt on a Utah freeway, I think, “People in Utah are weird, funny or dangerous!” If I see an article ranking all 50 states, I inevitably look at my own state... and Utah.
I wonder why I (and apparently many other CBers) either make generalizations about Utah or wonder about how others perceive Utah?
