We just replaced a highly experienced assistant coach with a rookie. (Unless I'm mistaken but I dont think Cummard has coached anywhere else) We have already been a team that has at times felt poorly coached at times, and I dont see any reason to think a rookie will fix that.
We have guys like Childs, and potentially others on missions deciding whether to come back to BYU. An experienced coach with a good reputation helps us there, a rookie I dont think does.
I'm not sure that we should be hiring guys and giving them their first jobs — shouldnt that be happening at the HS level or Juco level or low level Big Sky type programs?
We're on a slide as a program, are we not? Is there any reason to believe that a rookie will fix that?
I liked Cummard as a player, and have never heard anything negative. But if we're trying to right the ship so to speak I dont know feel confident that hiring a rookie is a hire that excites recruits, or helps improve the team. This is not about Cummard, this is about the general direction of the program and the perception of a rookie hire that makes it feel like it isnt a move that has a reason to expect an impact.
