I had the same thought when I first read this, but if the Ute was not friendly
Then I think it changes it. Travelcoug was the only one there and could tell by the guys tone of voice and body language as well as delivery of the line how it was intended. In that case, I think he's free to defend himself. However, as others said and you seem to allude to, going after the guys occupation is a little too far.
