Sometimes hard to separate anecdote from systemic issues
One of the challenges that BYU is facing when it comes to basketball recruiting is an issue of projection. It's not unique to our program, but we need to do a better job with the back end of our recruiting classes. This particular guy is anecdotal, but you have all of the signs of someone that has the potential of being a late bloomer. Not on the AAU circuit, young for his grade, growth spurt, developing body. These are the types of kids I think BYU needs to be searching more for. I also think that Rose is aware of this issue. If you look at the offers to Hardnett, Bergersen, and Kajon Brown (who obviously was a miss) Rose seems to be trying to inject more athleticism into the lineup.

Part of our frustration of fans has been that it seems like players don't "develop". This isn't limited to basketball either. Heaps is a prime example of someone who came in and didn't grow as a player in football, whether at BYU, Kansas, or Miami. TJ and Nick have also been criticized for this. Part of the reality may be that these guys have highly refined games prior to coming to BYU compared to their peers. Let's face it, the Lone Peak kids had access to better coaching, training, and diet than their peers who are less fortunate monetarily. Nick and TJ were national recruits and slam dunk offers. But a lot of the recruiting "letdowns" going back through our history have similar stories.
