You are right, critics loved it, audiences did not. RT gave it a 93% critics score with only a 43% audience score.
Compare that to the 88% audience score that The Force Awakens received.

Who cares about the political agenda. It was just a dumb 45 min scene that did nothing to enhance the story or plot.
