...you could see that shooters like Zac and TJ would constantly second guess themselves on whether it was okay to shoot or not. They would start to shoot, hesitate and then pull the ball back and look to pass it. Hardnett also did this fairly often. It's not a whole lot different than when an opposing player talks trash during a game and gets inside a players head and affects their confidence. 2nd guessing yourself is a killer in basketball and pure shooters like Haws and Seljaas did a lot of that last year and it affected other players like Hardnett. Even McKay Cannon came out guns blazing in his first game with BYU (at UVU) and within a couple games was no longer looking to shoot the ball and was just a perimeter passer on offense and struggled to hit shots when he did shoot (usually when the shot clock was expiring).
It sounds like Rose wants the pendulum to swing back to the middle this coming season and hopefully that translates into coaches letting instinctive players play instinctively. Taking an open shot in rhythm is a better shot than one forced and under duress at the end of the shot clock because nobody else was open and time was running out. Certain guys need to have the freedom to shoot earlier in the shot clock if the right conditions occur (open, in rhythm, etc). I think once that freedom is restored you'll see their confidence and ability to hit shots return as well.
