- Liked the visual style — the contrast, the stylized sets, etc.
- Liked that it was generally upbeat and fast-paced.
- Liked that it was under 2 hours — too rare today.
- Meh on the total white-washing of Barnum. His actually life was actually much more interesting than depicted (according to my brief review of his Wikipedia page, anyway — European tours, Mayor of Bridgeport), as well as more troubling (cruel exploitation, etc.). It's just a movie, not a documentary, but still. Not a big deal, but I would like to see a more grounded portrayal of his actual life.
- Biggest complaint would probably be just how underdeveloped everything was. It felt like a music video or like a highlight version or storyboard of itself — like the writers had just noted "then we have a scene where his wife forgives him" or "scene: they fall in love". Movie was shortcut after shortcut. Did Efron and Zendaya ever actually have a real conversation? IIRC, they started to, then broke into a song that shortcut to the next stage of their relationship. But, there's only so much time.
- Music was fine but not amazing in my (musically-uneducated) opinion. The "Never" song is way too repetitive. Liked the one the kids sang.
- Overall thought it was mostly fun but slight.
