the sport. There was no rivalry between the US and Mexico when I was growing up, because the US was awful, and no one here cared anyway. To me, Mexico was a massive underdog on the world stage that managed to improve over the years and make themselves relevant, and lost some matches they probably should have won against established powers in several World Cups.

Don’t get me started on Germany, but I will say that true US fans remember that WC quarterfinal match in 2002 vs Germany, and the ball that the Germans cleared off their line with a handball that they got away with, knocking us out of the World Cup and killing the best chance at glory we’ve ever had. This was much worse than anything Mexico has ever done to US soccer.
